Description
Upstate New York was one of the camping areas my Mom and Dad used to take me and my four siblings to in the summer. We didn't spend a lot of time there. My Dad had purchased a pop-up tent-trailer (Nimrod, for those interested) and he liked to take us kids out to see the world beyond Long Island and New York City.
I was mesmerized by these experiences. Waking up early to the smell of my Mom making breakfast on an outdoor propane stove. The smell of campfires. The fun of cooking (burning) marshmallows. Of course we all had canteens, toy binoculars, little cameras, and an assortment of souvenirs we picked up along the way.
One morning I remember waking up and seeing this little sailboat gliding across the surface of the lake we had camped next to. It was magical. It seemed like the man on that boat must be as free as a bird.
It is that spirit that I hope I have captured in this painting.
